Karrubi publishes prison detainees rape account

They have dismissed him, attempted to silence him and threatened him with arrest. Mehdi Karrubi, pictured, ran against hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June 12 election.

But Iran's Islamic hardliners so far have failed to stifle opposition leader Mehdi Karrubi's claims that post-election detainees have been abused -- some even raped -- behind bars.
Two die in hurricane-whipped surf

Fierce waves churned up by Hurricane Bill were linked to the deaths of two people at the weekend, including a 7-year-old girl swept out to sea off Maine, officials reported.

The girl died Sunday after a large ocean wave kicked up by Hurricane Bill knocked her and two other people into the Atlantic at Maine's Acadia National Park, a park official said. The other two survived after being rescued by the Coast Guard.
Pakistan foils suicide terror plot

Pakistani forces in the last month foiled a planned attack on the parliament building, the intelligence agency and other federal institutions, the country's interior minister told CNN Sunday.

In the last four weeks, authorities arrested three men with suicide vests who were plotting to carry out the attacks, said Interior Minister Rehman Malik.
Afghans risk death to vote

In parts of the capital Kabul, where recent calm was shattered with a series of attacks leading up to the benchmark vote, the streets were eerily empty early in the day, save extra security checkpoints.

Afghanistan's government on Wednesday called for a media blackout on reporting violence as fresh attacks threatened disruptions a day ahead of pivotal presidential elections. An Afghan policeman walks near the bank in Kabul where an armed robbery ended in a gun battle.The media was asked to refrain from covering any attacks on election day in an effort to "ensure the wide participation of the Afghan people."
Divisions over Venezuela media measures

The recent closure of 32 privately owned radio stations and a proposed law to punish "media crimes" are signs that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is moving to quash criticism of his government, according to a recent U.S. intelligence report.

Chavez's government is "moving forcefully to silence critics," said the unclassified U.S. analysis prepared by the Open Source Center, a government intelligence center.
19 killed by bombing in Russias Ingushetia

At least 19 people died and about 70 were wounded following a suicide bombing Monday morning outside a police headquarters in Nazran in the Russian republic of Ingushetia, Russian state television reported.

"The fire was finally extinguished, but there could be more dead and wounded under the rubble of the exploded building," it said.
Convicted American freed from Myanmar

An American sentenced to seven years hard labor in Myanmar after he sneaked into the home of detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, arrived in Thailand on Sunday with the U.S. senator who secured his release.

John William Yettaw was taken to hospital in Bangkok shortly after arriving aboard a military aircraft with Sen. Jim Webb.

Car bomb explodes near NATO HQ in Kabul

A suicide car bombing exploded outside the NATO headquarters in Afghanistan early Saturday, killing seven people and injuring 91 just five days before the country holds presidential elections, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.

The massive bomb detonated near the main gate of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters.
Missing cargo ship found

A missing Russian cargo ship is in international waters north of Cape Verde, according to Portugal's state news agency, which quoted Cape Verde's defense director.

"The ship is now about 400 nautical miles north of Sao Vicente, outside the exclusive economic zone of Cape Verde," Pedro Reis said Friday.

In late April, WHO announced the emergence of a novel influenza A virus.

This particular H1N1 strain has not circulated previously in humans. The virus is entirely new.

The virus is contagious, spreading easily from one person to another, and from one country to another. As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.

This is only part of the picture. With few exceptions, countries with large numbers of cases are those with good surveillance and testing procedures in place.
