Clinton arrives in Pakistan to write new chapter in relations

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived Wednesday in nuclear-armed Pakistan, a country hit hard by terrorism, economic crisis and rising sentiment that it is paying too high a price for its partnership with the United States in fighting extremists.
Al Qaeda in Iraq ally claims bombings

An umbrella group affiliated with al Qaeda in Iraq claimed responsibility Tuesday for a pair of weekend bombings that killed 160 people in Baghdad.

The Islamic State of Iraq issued a statement saying it carried out the attacks. The authenticity of the claim could not immediately be verified, but it appeared on a Web site frequently used by the group.
Karadzic boycotts start of war crimes trial

U.N. judges adjourned the long-awaited war-crimes trial of Radovan Karadzic on Monday after the former Bosnian Serb leader refused to appear on the opening day.

Karadzic, who is accused of masterminding the worst massacre in Europe since World War II, claimed he did not have enough time to prepare his defense. He is representing himself.
Karzai: Refusing runoff would insult democracy

Afghanistan's president is downplaying accusations of widespread fraud in his country's recent elections, but he's emphasizing the importance of a runoff for the sake of ensuring peace and stability in his nascent and war-torn democracy.

Iran mourns dozens killed in attack

Three days of mourning began in the Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan on Monday, after dozens of people were killed in a militant attack a day earlier, state media reported.

A man carrying explosives blew himself up Sunday as participants headed to a conference between Shia and Sunni groups in southeastern Iran, killing at least 42, state-run Press TV reported.
28,000 Pakistani troops sent to root out militants

Pakistani troops have launched a massive ground offensive backed up by air power targeting the Taliban in South Waziristan, a refuge and a power base for insurgents operating in Pakistan and along the Pakistani-Afghan border. The offensive, which comes after a wave of suicide attacks in Pakistan, has prompted the exodus of tens of thousands of civilians, a U.N. refugee agency says.
U.N. rights council backs Gaza 'war crimes' report

The United Nations Council for Human Rights approved a controversial report Friday which said Israel and Hamas committed "actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity" during the December-January war.

Israel's military campaign in Gaza, called Operation Cast Lead, lasted three weeks.

Clinical features of severe cases of pandemic influenza

To gather information about the clinical features and management of pandemic influenza, WHO hosted a three-day meeting at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization in Washington, DC on 14–16 October. Findings and experiences were presented by around 100 clinicians, scientists, and public health professionals from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania.

In late April, WHO announced the emergence of a novel influenza A virus.

This particular H1N1 strain has not circulated previously in humans. The virus is entirely new.

The virus is contagious, spreading easily from one person to another, and from one country to another. As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.

This is only part of the picture. With few exceptions, countries with large numbers of cases are those with good surveillance and testing procedures in place.
