Sean Cononie bounded out of the back of an ambulance ahead of most of the other volunteers. A bullhorn in his hand, he was, in a sense, the pied piper.

Microsoft help desk less busy after Windows 7

There are many ways to measure how Windows 7 is doing. There are reports on new PC sales, tallies of boxed copy sales, and surveys of planned enterprise adoption, to name a few.

But one of the most encouraging signs for Microsoft is the lack of phone calls it is getting from people with problems. Overall, Microsoft said the volume of calls to its support lines is half of what it expected.
Search suspended for 2 hikers lost on Mount Hood

Citing the threat of avalanches, officials Tuesday suspended the search for two hikers missing since Friday morning on Mount Hood and held out little hope they would be found alive.

"Could they be alive?" asked Dr. Terri Schmidt, physician supervisor for American Medical Response in Clackamas County, Oregon. "Yes. Is it very likely? No."
Citigroup strikes deal to repay TARP

Citigroup said Monday it has struck a deal with the government to return $20 billion in bailout money to taxpayers.

The New York City-based lender said it would raise the money through a combination of stock and debt, the bulk of which would come from a $17 billion common stock offering.

U.S. offers to pay Native Americans $1.4 billion for lost funds

Thousands of American Indians would receive as much as $1,000 each if they accept a proposed $1.4 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit over government mismanagement of tribal lands.

The suit, filed in 1996, accused the U.S. Department of the Interior of failing to account for and provide revenue from a trust fund representing the value of Indian assets managed by the government.
Major storm moving east across U.S.

The first major storm of the season was pounding the Western United States and was headed eastward Tuesday toward the Rockies in Colorado and New Mexico, the National Weather Service said.

Up to 3 feet of snow were expected in the Rockies, with winds up to 90 mph. The Sierras straddling California and Nevada already were knee-deep with 2 to 3 feet of snow, and a foot was forecast to fall in Iowa and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In a locked workroom at the University of Delaware Library, Amanda Daddona was sifting through boxes of 18th- and 19th-century documents last month when she stumbled upon an unexpected treasure.

Tucked amid obscure financial records and the minutes of Quaker meetings was an unmarked folder containing a letter written in Washington on Feb. 24, 1808.
Tiger Woods cancels tournament appearance

Tiger Woods has canceled plans to attend his own golf tournament in southern California because of injuries he suffered near his Florida home early Friday, the pro golfer said in a statement Monday.

"I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week," Woods said of the Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, California. "I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I'm very sorry that I can't be there."

In late April, WHO announced the emergence of a novel influenza A virus.

This particular H1N1 strain has not circulated previously in humans. The virus is entirely new.

The virus is contagious, spreading easily from one person to another, and from one country to another. As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.

This is only part of the picture. With few exceptions, countries with large numbers of cases are those with good surveillance and testing procedures in place.
