Suspect in 8 Virginia killings surrenders

A suspect in the shooting deaths of eight people in Virginia has turned himself in, authorities said Wednesday morning. Police identified the suspect as Christopher Speight, 39. He
approached a law enforcement officer and surrendered sometime early
Wednesday, police said in a brief statement to the news media.

Murder trial shines national spotlight on abortion debate

admits he fatally shot Dr. George Tiller, one of four abortion
providers in the country who performed late-term abortions.

Burned body in trash identified as Playboy model

Paula Sladewski, a 26-year-old who once modeled for Playboy, was
identified Wednesday by Miami police as the person found dead and
"burned beyond recognition" in a trash bin on Sunday.
Now,
police are asking for the public's help to put her killer behind bars.
Whoever the murderer is, police said, they are nothing short of a
"monster."

Online poster appears to be Christmas Day bomb suspect

"Farouk1986" introduced himself to a Muslim online community with these words in February 2005.
"My
name is Umar but you can call me Farouk," the poster continues,
detailing biographical information that appears to match the life of
Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian man accused of
attempting to detonate an explosive on an international flight into
Detroit, Michigan, on Christmas Day.

Device was on fire in terror suspect's lap, plane passenger says

A Nigerian man is "talking a lot" to the FBI, said a senior U.S.
official, after what the United States believes was an attempted
terrorist attack on an inbound international flight.
The initial
impression is that the suspect was acting alone and did not have any
formal connections to organized terrorist groups, said the official,
who is familiar with the investigation.

Burned Florida teen out of hospital

A 15-year-old boy who was burned over 65 percent of his body in
October when he was set on fire, allegedly by a group of teenagers, was
released from the hospital Tuesday, officials said.
Michael
Brewer was discharged from the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial
Hospital Burn Center, spokeswoman Lorraine Nelson said in a written
statement.

Prosecutor in immigrant's beating death suspected cover-up

The Pennsylvania prosecutor who failed to secure felony convictions
against two teens in the beating death of a Mexican immigrant says he
thought his case was "compromised" from the start.

residents in the small, tight-knit eastern Pennsylvanian community of

3 police officers among 5 people indicted in race-related beating

Five people, including three police officers, have been indicted on
charges related to the beating death of a Latino man in rural
Pennsylvania in July 2008, the Justice Department said Tuesday.
Two
indictments charge the five with federal hate crimes, obstruction of
justice and conspiracy in what authorities are calling a racially
motivated attack.
